GameSpoon - The Art of Writing, Making War with Words

The Art of Writing, Making War with Words

How many times have you left a movie theater or watched a season finale of a television series and have actually felt upset, saddened? Have you ever allowed a book to engulf yourself, completely removing you from reality, grounding you in your mind – beyond your control? This is the power of a writer.

A good writer has the ability to manipulate your emotions with language. The art of writing has a foundation that spans centuries with influences from nearly all cultures. It’s a skill that people are not born with, but develop as we grow. The ability to transfer sounds (spoken language) into visual shapes (written language) is something we take for granted; it is a powerful tool.

Spider-Man

As Stan Lee says, “with great power comes great responsibility” and when it comes to video games, we often find this power misused. Ask yourself, “how often have you felt an emotional attachment to a storyline in a video game?” There has yet to be a game with a storyline so well written that it could change the direction of the entire industry.

There are two schools of thought here. The first deals with the fact that gaming is simply a form of entertainment, similar to a card game or board game, but on a much more visual level. In this school of thought, there is hardly room for a dramatic, captivating storyline – and why should there be drama?

The second school of thought is the relatively new idea of “video games as art.” This approach puts gaming on a level that rivals movies, books, plays and music; it allows games to be another outlet, or medium, for storytelling. Opening the doors into the elite industry of storytelling requires video game developers to employ quality, experienced writers.

Video games have a unique approach to drama that no other mediums can emulate. This approach is found through the ability of the audience to break down the wall of “passive” entertainment, to emerge into a world of “active” entertainment. No other medium is capable of allowing the intended audience to make decisions that change the actual story! This creates a brand new world for writers to explore, taking some of that power away, in exchange for opportunities regarding choices.

Heavy Rain

Quantic Dream studio’s upcoming title “Heavy Rain” (PS3) is a game that capitalizes on this emerging path for unique narrative forms. The game intends to challenge the audience’s emotional response and morality. As Director David Cage said, “the real message is about how far you're willing to go to save someone you love” (http://tinyurl.com/ojqm2f).

Quantic Dream is just one studio that is pushing the boundaries of video game art forms. As more studios continue to explore this territory, we may soon find the industry split into various genres, well beyond the typical FPS, action/adventure, RPG variations; new genres will emerge, those that may rival the film industry for our visual story experiences.

GameSpoon: Magic: The Gathering XBLA

Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers was recently released on Xbox Live Arcade to provides us with a great opportunity to play this iconic card game.

Magic: The Gathering is a trading card game that was released in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast. MTG is a highly addictive game that involves two (or more) players who assume the role of a spell-casting "planeswalker" in a battle of strategy, skill and luck of the draw.

It was around 1994, the time MTG Revised was released, when my friends and I began to explore the card game. A good friend of mine introduced a few of us to MTG and taught us how to play. It took a while for me to grasp the concept of the game, but it didn't take long for my friend to take advantage of my lack-of-knowledge in order to swindle me out of some good cards. "Sure, I'll trade you this one card for 5 of yours!" I thought he was the sucker...I miss my "Force of Nature."

Don't worry folks, I got my revenge. After I picked up the game, I started investing all the money I had at that time into buying cards and building decks. The game consumed my life with an obsession that could not be tamed. I poured over catalogs of MTG cards and looked for ways to build the most effective deck that I could possibly imagine. A different friend of mine and I would spend hours playing against each other, trading cards, strategically building decks and traveling to our local hobby store to challenge others. It all paid off, when we both challenged our card-swindling buddy. Match after match, he failed to stand a chance. He loved his green and blue decks - one which was a stasis deck that backfired on him horribly against our hand and land destruction decks; sometimes revenge is sweet.

Anyway, time passed on and I started to drift away from MTG. The obsession fell into a deep slumber, occasionally awaking, but only for short times. Then Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers on Xbox Live Arcade stepped into my life.

Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers is a great experience. It captures the feeling of playing with the real, physical thing. As you play through the campaign, you unlock cards and decks to further expand upon your arsenal. The game play is smooth and smart - when you encounter one of the many complex situations that arise during play (i.e. what rule happens first and when does this take affect), you'll find the results to be satisfying; expected resolutions.

I've spent many hours playing the Campaign mode - both single player and co-op. I look forward to experiencing the Xbox Live matches too, but I'm saving that until I find the deck that is right for me.

My only complaint is the deck customization. I wish there was a DLC or inherit feature that allowed you to build a deck from the ground up; to be able to specify the number of cards you want, the type of cards you want and how many of each you want in your deck - total deck building freedom. Currently, preconstructed decks are the only type available to you. You do unlock cards to add to your decks, but the customization is restricted to just those bonus cards (meaning, you can only add/remove those unlocked cards). This is the one complaint I have on the game, but it is not something that would cause me to stop playing; I love this game.

Check out Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers on Xbox Live Arcade; for only 800 MS points the game could be yours! If you are new to MTG, there is a learning curve for mastering combos and strategies, but it is easy to pickup the basics! I highly recommend getting this game, try the demo or just buy the whole thing. If you like MTG, you can't go wrong.

TubeSpoon: The Pacific

Maybe it is a guy thing, maybe it actually transcends gender, but whatever it is, Band of Brothers has it. That miniseries changed my life with the story of the brotherhood of the US soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division, 506/2 PIR, easy company.

I think I speak for many, when I say that this series is one of the, if not, the best miniseries that has ever been made. As much as I love it and as much as I wish there was more to watch, there is only the series...until 2010!

The Pacific is not a sequel to Band of Brothers, but rather it is the next story being told of the second World War. This time the story will follow the US involvement in the Pacific theater, focusing on the US Marines (1st Marine Division).

I am looking forward to this series very much. I am not expecting it to be the next Band of Brothers, it will be different, but I do expect it to trigger the same type of feelings and in depth understanding of the life of a Marine during the pacific theater.

Our grandfathers, great grandfathers for some, were part of a special generation; one of the bravest generations in the history of the US. Many people may be tired of movies, tv and games that are set during WWII, but their story should be told.

Look for The Pacific on HBO in March of 2010.

GameSpoon: The Next Xbox Rumors

Gizmodo posted about a rumor they heard regarding the next xbox. They learned that the next xbox will not only have Natal built-in, but it will also support a fully immersible 3D environment.

Gizmodo's post referred to a Team Xbox article, which stated, "in addition to built-in Natal tech, a key feature of the next Xbox would be full HD stereoscopic 3D visuals similar to 3D movie theatres" (Team Xbox). Also, according to Gizmodo, "TeamXbox claims that the 720 won't be launched until 3D television solutions go more mainstream" (Gizmodo).

Let's recap some information here -

  • Project Natal, which will be available for the Xbox 360, is clearly a future that Microsoft will be exploring and improving upon

  • Microsoft employee Johnny Chung Lee, who is working on Project Natal, has already created an interactive 3D environment with a WiiMote

  • At E3, Microsoft announced a 10 year lifespan for the Xbox 360

So what does this all mean? First, we can assume that the Project Natal's release on the Xbox 360 will basically be a massive "beta-testing" ground for the future of that type of technology. I use "beta-testing" loosely, it will be a fully-functioning add on to the 360, but the future of the Xbox console clearly has this technology in mind. So why not test it out on the current system, get the bugs out, see what developers can do and use the time to explore more ideas around the technology?

Next, we come to Johnny Chung Lee. Seeing how he has already created an interactive 3D environment (using a WiiMote), sure sounds like it is on par with this "fully immersible 3D environment" that the 360's successor is rumored to have. Watch this video:

Last, it brings us to the 10 year plan for the Xbox 360. Now, this does not mean that we have to wait for the full 10 years before the next system comes out, but it does buy Microsoft some valuable time. Time that they may not need, but time that the public will need to adapt to "3D television solutions."

I once had the pleasure of hearing Jawed Karim, a co-founder of YouTube, speak about the success of YouTube; the success of that website directly correlated with the publics' adaption to high-speed internet - thus being able to stream video. YouTube would not have been successful if the site launched before 2005. He stressed the importance of timing and technology, basically when the masses are ready for the new technology. This reasoning sounds like justification for Microsoft's patience.

Regardless of whether these rumors are true or not, these next few years will be exciting times. The way we've known console gaming is going to change forever, but these changes will be good. They will bring us forward and offer new experiences that will change the way we game and the way we interact with our games. Perhaps this will further break down the wall between gaming and film, joining forces to breed a new way of telling stories.

GameSpoon: New Super Mario Bros. Wii footage

The New Super Mario Bros. Wii game could, in fact, be one of my favorite titles for the Nintendo Wii. I look forward to the multi-player experience in the game; up to four people playing at once! That will be fun.

This is the type of game that the Wii needs to capitalize on; 2D side-scrollers. I'm completely biased though. I grew up with the original NES and all I ever knew Nintendo to be, was a 2D side-scrolling platformer (with various exceptions such as the original Zelda). Anyway, this game looks great!

TubeSpoon - Upfronts Preview of ABC's Remake Of 'V'.

Fans of the early 80's sci-fi series will certainly be looking forward to ABC's upcoming remake. 'V' tells the story of a technologically advanced race of aliens that come to earth in peace...or so we're lead to believe. As the majority of Earth has accepted this new race as their saviors, a resistance is silently being formed. Their symbol is a spray painted red V...V For Victory.

Some familiar faces can be seen in this update, including Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliette from Lost), Scott Wolf (Party Of Five), and Morena Baccarin (Firefly).

This could be another hit for ABC and--along with the upcoming Flash Forward--could fill the void when Lost ends next year.

TubeSpoon - CHUCK SAVED! Picked Up For A 3rd Season...but there's a catch.

Alright, the good news is that The Hollywood Reporter is, well, reporting that Chuck has been renewed and that NBC/Uni will announce on Tuesday. All good, right? That's what we at The Spoon and fans around the world wanted.

But this is NBC we're dealing with; there's always a catch.

The Reporter is also reporting that the Josh Schwartz comedy will suffer a MASSIVE budget cut. That means less visual effects, action sequences, and/or (heaven forbid) dropping cast members. I think we all know where they are going with this.

Buy More crew? See ya.

Ellie and Awesome? Later.

It has been a rocky road for Chuck, but at least it is getting the 3rd Season that it sorely needs. Especially after that Season 2 finale...

GameSpoon - Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Redemption, the new upcoming game from Rockstar Games. This title looks sweet! I only hope it delivers.

Having never played the predecessor to Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Revolver (a game that received average scores; released in 2004), I honestly can't tell you what I expect from the game play. I love the prospect of an old west setting, it's a great setting for an action/adventure game based on outlaws.

Red Dead Redemption places you in the shoes of Clint Eastwood-style, former outlaw named John Martson. You are tasked with bringing law to the open world of the old frontier of the west; you can surely expect a few gunfights along the way.

The game will launch in the Fall of this year (2009) and will be available for both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. This gives you plenty of time to clean out your spitoon, polish your Colt Peacemaker and saddle your ride... ye haw!

Enjoy!

TubeSpoon - CHUCK SAVED? Stay Tuned.

UPDATE: Chuck's fate will be decided on May 19th. By our own admission, The Spoon may have jumped the gun. NBC's Ben Silverman is now reporting that IF Chuck comes back, it may not be on Monday nights.

STAY TUNED.

After a week of internet speculation, a Subway campaign, and heated, coffee-fueled debate (primarily amongst those of us at The Spoon), NBC/Universal is expected to announce the renewal of CHUCK for next season. The spy comedy will join Parks & Recreation, Medium, Law & Order, and Southland as NBC's hour long survivors in the upcoming The Jay Leno Show era.

RandmSpn - Washingtn Natinals

.......no comment

Two players from the Washington Nationals on the 17th wore jerseys that sported the incorrect spelling of the teams name. Adam Dunn and Ryan Zimmerman took the field last Friday sporting the name Natinals. The issue was resolved by the third inning, but not before it got the commentators, sports writers, and SportsCenter's attention.

Jersey maker Majestic took full responsibility on the 23rd. "All of us at Majestic Athletic want to apologize to both the Washington Nationals and Major League Baseball for accidentally omitting the 'o' in two Nationals jerseys," Majestic Athletic president Jim Pisani said in a statement. He continued; "We take 100 percent responsibility for this event and we regret any embarrassment for the Nationals organization, players and fans."

It's not like the Nationals are having a stellar season as it is. At 3-11, they are 5th in the NL East. Kind of fits with the theme this season so far, I'd say.

My last thought on this: Does it make it even MORE embarrassing that they play at our nations capital?

TubeSpoon - The State on DVD..........maybe?

I see some familiar faces.

Fond memories of my youth revolve around the television series "The State". The State was a sketch comedy show that aired on MTV from December of 1993 to July of 1995 and sparked the career of some comedians you may have seen. Members of The State have gone on to write, act in/or direct other shows and films as Wet Hot American Summer,Reno 911!, Stella, Viva Variety, and Human Giant.

There have been rumors the last few years about the series being released on DVD. As of January 29, 2008, Michael Showalter has confirmed that MTV is still delaying the release: "They have it. We've made the DVD, and it exists. It's out of our hands, and I know who has it, but I don't know why they're waiting... we've done the commentary and the deleted material and all that stuff, but I just don't know when it's coming out." [avclub.com]. The biggest setback appears to be licensing to the songs used during the skits. The cost to use the songs would be more than they would project to bring in from sales.

I was recently informed that there was a release date but As of 04/14/2009, it appears that this was just another rumor. According to The State's official website: "Despite rumors to the contrary, there is still no official release date for The State MTV series DVDs.". So MTV still does not want to shell out the money to license the songs.

So, in leiu of this infromation, I will have to stick to watching my favorite skits in crappy youtube quality. Skits like the one below. Let's see what happens when a friendly race between a father and son goes tragically wrong.

FlickSpoon - Netflix Now Coming to More "Platforms"

Can Mario finally finish season 6 of "The Sopranos"?

Rumor has it that Netflix is now coming to a console near you. It has been nearly 5 months since the service has been released for the Xbox360, and since then Netflix has gained more than 1 million subscribers to their service. An impressive number considering the company totals about 10 million subscribers.

Now it appears that Netflix would like to branch out to other console owners. It has been confirmed that they are looking for an "Engineering Leader--Gaming Platforms" to direct "a small technology team to rapidly prototype and iterate on a variety of platforms."

While it has not been confirmed what platform they are looking to expand to, the most obvious choice is the PS3. But what about the Wii? Some people say that there will be a disc that you can purchace for $9.99 that will allow you to access the Netflix streaming library. Others, such as Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, state that the Nintendo service would be different from their competetors.

GameSpoon - Top 25 hardest games...

A reference of a reference...

Kotaku summed up an article that GameDaily posted about on what they think are the Top 25 Hardest Games of All Time!

I like Kotaku's quick, one-page summary, so I've decided to quote their list:

25. Ice Climber (NES)
24. Viewtiful Joe (GameCube, PS2)
23. MDK 2
22. Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link (NES)
21. Metal Slug series
20. Tetris
19. Gauntlet 1
18. Portal
17. Bionic Commando series
16. Guitar Hero series (On Expert)
15. Shinobi (PS2)
14. F-Zero GX (GameCube)
13. Mushihimesama Futari
12. Doom (On Nightmare Difficulty)
11. Call of Duty 4 (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
10. Contra series
9. Defender
8. Devil May Cry 3 (PS2)
7. God of War series (PS2)
6. R-Type series
5. Ikaruga (GameCube, Xbox Live Arcade)
4. Mega Man 9 (Xbox Live Arcade, WiiWare, PlayStation Network)
3. Battletoads
2. Gouls N' Ghosts series
1. Ninja Gaiden series

This is a very interesting list. Honestly, I'm not sure why COD4 is so close to the top and why Contra isn't in the top position - can anyone honestly beat the game without The Code??

I am happy to see Battletoads on this list, because that game puts the "wtf" in "tough!" What do you think of the list?

RandomSpoon - Polar Bear Finds Idiot Delicious.

........No Comment

On Friday, at a local Berlin Zoo, a German woman decided it would be fun to get a closer look at a Polar Bear during feeding time. Somehow the woman thought that she would not be mistaken for dinner, jumped the fence, and proceeded to get mauled by an adult Polar Bear. Zoo workers eventually did get the woman out of the bears habitat, but not without the bear pulling her back in to his lair first.

It is important to note that the woman has yet to explain why she entered the Polar Bear habitat. Although, if her reasoning was to be treated for bite wounds and a citation for trespassing, she succeeds.

Game Informer has released the cover of their May issue (#103). This cover reveals the new hero of the upcoming game Assassin's Creed 2.

Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed 2 will take place in Renaissance-era Venice. The role of Altair has been replaced by a new assassin named Ezio. Who, according to Game Informer, is "a young noble whose family was lost through rival ruling families' betrayals."

As a fan of the original Assassin's Creed, I really look forward to experiencing this sequel. But I can't help but wonder, how will this fit with the ending of the original game? Time will tell.

FlickSpoon/GameSpoon - No 'Pirates 4' For Verbinski--'Bioshock' Instead.

Variety is reporting that director Gore Verbinski, whose main claim to fame came from directing Disney's blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean" action-adventure trilogy to gross $2.6 billion worldwide, has decided that three pirate movies is enough. He's informed Disney and producer Jerry Buckheimer that he won't be directing the fourth installment, which is currently scheduled to start shooting in 2010.

Verbinski told the trade: "I had a fantastic time bringing 'Pirates' to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team. I'm looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future."

Instead, Verbinski will focus on his adaptation of the bestselling video game BioShock for Universal Pictures, which is expected to start production in 2010 based on a script by John Logan.

Next up for Verbinski is the Paramount animated film Rango, also written by Logan, which is due for release on March 18, 2011. The filmmaker is also developing a new live action movie based on the Hasbro board game Clue, written by Steven Knight.

FlickSpoon/GameSpoon - Sony Pictures Adapting 'Shadow Of The Colossus'.

Sony Pictures will adapt the popular PlayStation 2 title "Shadow of the Colossus" into a big screen action film, with Justin Marks writing the screenplay and Kevin Misher in negotiations to produce, says Variety.

"Colossus," which was released exclusively on the PlayStation 2 in 2005, revolves around a man named Wander who must travel across a cursed wasteland and defeat 16 creatures, known as the colossi, in order to restore the life of a girl.

The project, which proved a big seller for PlayStation and was produced internally by Sony Computer Entertainment, will build upon the video game's fantasy setting of a solitary world with few characters other than the 16 enemies.

GameSpoon - Fatality! Mortal Kombat Developers to leave Midway?

It has been reported by Kotaku that the Mortal Kombat development team has been in talks with other publishers as well as seeking out an opportunity for their own studio.

The development team has been frustrated with pay - you can't blame them, money is important in this economy. The bankruptcy of Midway is the root of this issue. The developers were supposed to receive bonuses for meeting sales goals. After attaining these goals, they have not received compensation.

According to Midway, it is not their fault for the lack of compensation, but the "creditors committee" that is withholding these funds. Regardless of Midway's involvement in the actual payment of these bonuses, the development team is unhappy. I'm sure there are many reason outside of this compensation issue for their frustration with the company.

What does this mean for the future of the Mortal Kombat franchise that this development team that has working on for the last 17 years? We don't know! If the development team leaves, MK may not be coming with them. Will MK live on?

Ah, nothing like a good shot of Japanese commercials to wake you up in the morning. Well, that and a large coffee. I saw this post on Kotaku and thought it'd be perfect for the Japanophile in me (and subsequently, The Spoon); enjoy!

According to Kotaku, here's the background on this commercial:

Actress Miho Kanno appears in the DSiWare Brain Age ads. She's asked to make a face like she's seen something that she shouldn't have seen. She does and lets out a frightening laugh.

DSi Brain Age makes use of the camera and even has users make funny faces.

Why? Because stuff like makes you smarter. Duh.

Watch CBS Videos Online

This is worth watching, gain some insight into internet security. It's important to stay protected, the web is like the wild west and you wouldn't leave your house without your Colt Peacemaker would you??

*Update:
Apparently, CBS has made a few reporting errors and perhaps that is why the video was taken down.

While watching the original video, the "Russian gangs" of...kids...really stood out to me. I couldn't help but think, "bull shit."

Explain this - the US has the greatest education system in the world. I find it hard to believe that 14 year old geeks from Russia are out-smarting professional geeks in the US that have Masters and PhDs in Engineering and Computer Science. I don't find it difficult to believe that some extremely intelligent kid could create some sophisticated programs, but the photo of these "Russian gangs of kids" that CBS displayed gave me reason to doubt it. I guess I was on to something, along with a lot of other people. Apparently, CBS reported some incorrect information about those kids.

GameSpoon - Zero Punctuation: Resident Evil 5

Needless to say, I don't really give a damn about Resident Evil 5. I didn't have much of an issue with the game until I found out that Capcom is forcing people to invest more money into the game if they want to play online. Well, it might not be a lot of money, but it's the concept behind that - how far will this micro-transaction (aka "nickel and diming") bullshit go? I've already been a sucker for many other games - Halo 3, COD 4 & 5, Fable 2, Fallout 3, Street Fighter 4...I just don't really want to invest in RE5, because I just don't really have a drive to do that.

However, I still love Capcom and Yahztee's colorful review of the game just makes me want to play Resident Evil 4 again, maybe I'll fire that game up this weekend!

GameSpoon - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

This is the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 teaser and it has grabbed my attention.

I never really gave COD much of a chance when the game originally came out. COD 1 didn't grab my attention, I felt woozy playing COD 2 and I (mistakenly) bought COD 3 for the Wii at launch - hey, I really wanted to play an FPS on the Wii...needless to say, the COD series and I got off to the wrong start. That all changed the day I bought COD 4.

COD 4 changed me, but I was late to the series. I was am a hardcore Halo fan. So, while everyone else in the world jumped on the COD 4 ship, I stayed on shore in my Halo 3 multiplayer safe-haven. I missed the boat on this one and I had no clue what I was missing out on, until multiple friends finally convinced me to get the game. I pay homage to those friends now!

COD 4 is one of the greatest games I've ever played. I'm thrilled at the fact that Modern Warfare 2 is on the horizon! I can't wait to learn more about the game that is coming to us on November 10th, 2009.

However, it will be a sad day, because I LOVE Call of Duty: World at War! If you don't own that game, you better go buy it. It is awesome and I'm extremely addicted to it...it rocks.

SeriousSpoon - American Nightmare

The following came from CNN.com:

NEW YORK (CNN) -- There is a chill wind blowing across this land of ours.

People are losing faith in their ability to realize the American dream. While AIG pays out $165 million in bonuses to people who arguably contributed to the need for the federal government to hand them $170 billion of our money, and while politicians lie about who crafted the language that allowed this kind of stuff to happen (Are you listening Chris Dodd?), the average American is seeing his future disintegrate in front of his eyes.

Here are some numbers that suggest we are losing hope:

A CNN-Opinion Research Corp. poll shows 39 percent of those surveyed say they're very confident they'll be able to keep up their quality of life. That's down from 45 percent a year ago.

Fifty percent of homeowners with a mortgage say they're very confident they can keep making their house payments. Again, that's down from 58 percent a year ago.

Also down are the percentages of Americans who are confident they can pay their other debts, things like credit cards and car loans.

When it comes to saving for long-term goals, it's even worse.

Only 24 percent of parents say they're very confident they'll be able to pay to send their children to college, and only 22 percent of those who are still working think they'll be able to save enough for retirement.

This used to be the country where each succeeding generation could look forward to a better quality of life than their parents enjoyed.

In the meantime, as the federal government continues to print money that isn't worth the paper it's written on and as our national debt soars past $11 trillion, a United Nations panel is set to recommend that the world ditch the U.S. dollar as its reserve currency in favor of a shared basket of currencies.

One of the enduring strengths of the dollar has been that it has always been the currency of choice in times of crisis. But that's not the case anymore. Our ballooning deficits have driven down the value of the dollar so much that the Chinese government recently asked for guarantees from Washington that the Treasury bills they own are safe.

All of this isn't lost on the average American. Last week there were protests and demonstrations by taxpayers in cities all around the country who are beginning to object in increasing numbers to runaway government spending, taxes, bailouts and our growing national debt. These protests were called tea parties. Has a familiar ring to it, doesn't it?

JapanSpoon - Manzai!

Here's a shot of Japanese culture for you, thanks to Kotaku!

The Manzai group Audrey promotes the new DSi colors - lime green, pink and metallic blue. Let's watch...

According to Kotaku:

"Manzai" is a type of comedy where one member is the straight man, and the other is funny man. Here, the straight man, Masayasu Wakabayashi, has the colorful DSi handhelds in his pocket. The joke is that funny man Toshiyaki Kasuga doesn't want the pink DSi, but the green one.

That's cool, but...where's the metallica blue DSi? Well, I think the joke will make more sense if you watch an earlier TV spot with this Manzai group (i.e. the pink shirt)! Again, thanks to Kotaku:

According to Kotaku:

In this ad, the straight man Masayasu Wakabayashi says today we're going to talk about the DSi — namely the camera. Funny man Toshiyaki Kasuga appears, wearing a pink sweater and says "Kasuga's camera is pointed at you, ladies."

"Run away quick, please," Wakabayashi says to the ladies, gesturing. He then says let's take a picture and snaps one of Kasuga.

He then says you can take pictures of "creepy Kasuga" with the DSi camera to which Kasuga replies: "Hey, you don't really think I'm creepy, do you?" Wakabayashi says if he really thought that, why would he be doing manzai with him. They both laugh hahahahahaha. BYE!

I love Japan!

GameSpoon - The King of Fighters XII

HELL YEAH!

SNK Playmore's The King of Fighters XII will be coming to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 in July - worldwide! This is fantastic news, previously there had been no word regarding a non-Japanese release of this amazing hand-drawn game.

According to Kotaku's article, the game will be reinventing itself, returning "to a core set of characters, relaunching with a new look but retaining the classic feel" (Kotaku).

"I couldn't think of a more appropriate way to commemorate The King of Fighter's 15-Year Anniversary than with a gorgeously animated, high-definition installment that updates the KOF legacy for a new generation." said Shane Bettenhausen, New Business Development Director of Ignition Entertainment. "While other fighting games have abandoned the time-consuming process of creating beautiful 2D art, KOFXII fully embraces the refined aesthetic beauty that only human hands can produce" (Kotaku).

This is fantastic news to hear, riding on the tails of the Street Fighter 4 release. Combing SF4, KOFXII and the new Tekken that's in the works - it's time to seriously consider building out a custom arcade stick from Arcade-in-a-Box.

I think I know how I'll be contributing to the global economy

RantSpoon - Quake Live's John Carmack

As a web developer, I sometimes get the feeling that we're looked down upon by non-web programmers (such as C++ people). I think that people view the web as something simple, because the primary tag-based language, HTML, is fairly simple.

Well, if people haven't noticed...the web is extremely different from the state it once was back in the early '90s. HTML is not responsible for just how cool and complex the web has become - it is not an easy job. Worst of all, web developers/designers have to account for a variety of browsers that each seem to handle code their own way - it's the wild west out there folks!

Anyway, it was great to read this quote from John Carmack during an interview with GameSpy regarding Quake Live:

What went not-so smoothly was building the website functionality, and the backend server side. A lot of that was just ignorance on our part. There's a little bit of hubris there, when you're a hotshot game developer and think that the website development stuff can't be all that challenging. We were somewhat disabused of that notion. It's easy to get something working, but the compatibility problems were quite a bit of effort.

At least some non-web developers had a bit of insight into the complexity of creating web applications.

Check out Quake Live Beta when you get a chance!

"How is this possible?" You ask. I'll tell you! Capcom's Unity site has the PDF version of the training manual up on their site for download, you can find it here:

GameSpoon - A week with Street Fighter IV!!!!!

Street Fighter totally ate its Wheaties.

I have been playing Street Fighter games since about 1993. I came across my first Street Fighter II game at a local strip mall. The game was in its demo mode and the fighters were Ken And Ryu chucking fireballs at each other. It was quite possibly the coolest, most monotonous thing I have ever seen.

Well, 18 years later, the newest iteration of the game has come out. Even though 3 other Street fighter games have come out since, Street Fighter IV is truly the next incarnation of II. This game plays the same way as II, and seamlessly incorporates features of the others.

I have dipped my toes into about everything this game has to offer. The Arcade mode features your standard series of one-on-one matches against a series of computer-controlled opponents. It has a standard local versus mode where you and a pal can jump kick and yell obscenities at each other. The training mode is also included, where you can hone your skills against an opponent you can set to stand, crouch, jump, & block as well as have a CPU or Human controlled opponent for never ending matches. There is also a Challenge mode where you can compete in a race against the clock to beat a series of opponents, a survival mode where you only get one life bar.......to beat a series of opponents, and a trial mode which teaches you the intricacies of combat.

And then there is the online mode.

Fuck! People are REALLY good at this game. The online mode provides you with player matches and ranked matches. Ranked matches give Battle Points to rank your skill in fighting. I have played a few ranked matches and got absolutely wrecked. I have won one match in online play, which gave me 87 BP. I now have 12. Sigh...... well, at least you can create our own room in the player match setting where you and your pal can jump kick and yell obscenities at each other.

Quite possibly the COOLEST new feature in the is game is the ability to set yourself open to challenges while playing in Arcade Mode. While going through your character's story, anyone at any time can challenge you to a fight. While you will not get too far in the Arcade mode with this on, it is neat to see A NEW CHALLENGER HAS ARRIVED come across the screen without anyone else sitting in your livingroom.

In my very biased opinion, this is the best fighting game I have ever played. If it isnt the best fighting game you have ever played, let me know........ so i can yell at you.

GameSpoon - Street Fighter 4

Last night SpoonThrash and I had our first online SF4 match against each other. Ken (SpoonThrash) vs. Ryu (SpoonRock) - classic.

It has been nearly a week since the two of us got our hands on a copy of Capcom's new Street Fighter. So far, we've spent that time training and exploring this game. But neither one of us had decided to fight each other yet...until last night.

Needless to say, it was a bad-ass experience. Shoryuken's were coming out of the wood-work. I won the first match (best of 3), Thrash won the second match (best of 5). I think MasterThrash has to teach me some of his skills....maybe this YouTube video will help?

Street Fighter 4 is awesome.
