Prince of Persia Animation Reference 1985 from jordan mechner on Vimeo.

I picked this up at Kotaku, this is fantastic! This is the original motion capture video used for the character animation in Prince of Persia. According to Kotaku, "[t]hat's PoP creator Jordan Mechner's little brother, running around in baggy pants. Mechner took this footage, tracked his bro's movements then based the Prince's animation on them."

Pretty rad.

GameSpoon - Bungie

The folks at GamesIndustry.biz have dug up some information pertaining to Bungie's future.

As suspected, Halo 3: Recon is not the only game Bungie has up their sleeve right now. They are working on a new IP, a non-Halo game. However, after Bungie's separation from Microsoft, the question then becomes, who will publish this game? Which platform(s) will this game be released on?

I don't know about you, but I can't imagine a world without a Bungie game for the Xbox. We can only hope that the game will be released on multiple platforms, but it sure sounds like Bungie still has some love for the 360.

Here's what Bungie's PR Director, Brian Jarrard, thinks of the 360:

For us the 360 has been great because there's just been this great synergy with Bungie because all of our games have this inherent social community aspect. . .Everything we've ever done has this very big online component - we, together with the Xbox consoles, have continued to push that Live experience, the whole notion of a party experience forward.

I like to think that we brought a lot of that to the market, and we want to keep iterating on that. In that regard Live has been a great service to us. It's astonishing to look at how well Halo 3 is doing even now, a year after release.

We haven't really seen much of a decline in play, and we recently surpassed the lifetime number of games ever played on Halo 2 - so we're talking about four years of Halo 2 boiling down to about 1 year of Halo 3.

It's been pretty astounding, and to see our fans stand by us, it's even more reason why we want to do Halo 3: Recon, just to give something back and extend the experience a little bit longer.

RandomSpoon - Star Trek vs. Star Wars

Ha, this is fantastic!

RandomSpoon - What the hell?

I ate a 20-pound burger and all I got was this stupid t-shirt...and $400

This guy ate a 20-pound burger in four hours and thirty-nine minutes. Why the hell would you eat a 20-pound burger? Well, let's find out...

The wonderful folks at Denny's Beer Barrel Pub created a burger called the "Beer Barrel Belly Bruiser." This massive burger is 15lbs of beef topped with 5.2lbs of lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, onions, banana peppers (mild), mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard and relish...and, of course, a bun.

So, why did Brad Sciullo do this? According to him, he "wanted to see if [he] could" (cnn.com). Well, good work Mr. Sciullo...I guess. If it took over 4 hours for that burger to enter your body...what happens when it leaves? That's messed up.

FlickSpoon - 'The Road' pushed to 2009

TubeSpoon - My Own Worst Enemy

Mondays just got a little bit better. Following Chuck and Heroes is the new one hour actioner 'My Own Worst Enemy' starring Christian Slater. Action? Yep. Espionage? Check. Complicated plot? Nah. If you could follow Total Recall, True Lies, and any given episode of Alias, you'll be just fine.

Christian Slater stars as Edward--badass, indestructible super agent. This guy is so super top secret; the agency he works for is so classified that a split personality had to be created within his brain. At the end of each mission he is "Put To Sleep", meaning he becomes the dormant personality Henry.

Henry works a boring job, has a loving family, and is wondering why he keeps having these dreams of adventure and intrigue.

Things, inevitably, get wild when Henry wakes up during one of Edwards missions.

You follow?

Anyway, if you can handle three hours of tv on Mondays you may as well watch 'My Own Worst Enemy' after 'Heroes'.

We owe it to Christian Slater...it's been a long road for that dude.

FlickSpoon - RocknRolla

For those of us who are fans of London gangster flicks like 'Snatch' and 'Lock, Stock, And Two Smoking Barrels'--'RocknRolla' hits a homerun. The story contains all the plot twists, crude dialogue, and idiotic crooks that we've come to love in Guy Ritchie's films.

It tells the tale of business deal between the London underground and the Russian mob. A "lucky" painting is involved. And at the heart of it all is a burnt out lead singer of a british rock group.

The performances are top of the line--the cast features Gerard Butler, Thandie Newton, and Tom Wilkinson (who is easily the most powerful character in the story).

It is currently in limited release and will go wide on Halloween. Keep an eye out for it, for Guy Ritchie fans it doesn't get any better than this.

FlickSpoon - Ridley Scott To Direct 'The Forever War'

Ridley Scott will direct his first sci-fi movie since Alien and Blade Runner. 'The Forever War' is a property he has had the rights to for almost twenty years. It tells the story of a war hero who returns to his home planet decades later to find that they don't know who he is. Scott has referred to it as "The Odyssey Meets Blade Runner".

I'm all about that.

GameSpoon - Call of Duty: World at War

I have to admit, I am a Halo guy. When Call of Duty 4 was released, I was too busy playing Halo 3 to notice. I discovered COD4 far too late into the lifespan of that game, but I have to tell you, I love that game! I was amazed by the campaign's gameplay, graphics and epic battles, but I was blown away by the COD4 multiplayer...it changed my life.

Needless to say, I was a bit worried when Call of Duty: World at War was annouced. After all, how could a WWII game hold up to the technology of modern warfare? Would COD5's multiplayer even be in the same realm as COD4? Well, thanks to the graciousness of SpoonGamer, I can put these questions to rest.

Today marks the release of Call of Duty: World at War's multiplayer beta! SpoonGamer hooked me up with some special access to this fantastic game. While waiting for the game to download, I nervously played some random XBA games, but I could barely even concentrate on what I was doing as I eagerly awaited COD5...then, it was time.

As soon as the game loaded, I instantly felt at home. The user interface, design and controls all felt reminiscent of COD4. I was easily able to jump into my first match. And what I experienced set the tone of my entire night.

First Impressions -
Call of Duty: World at War's multiplayer experience is remarkable. The gameplay is smooth, fast and challenging. COD5's predecessor took place in a modern setting which allowed for multiplayer features such as radar, airstrikes and helicopters; how could a WWII timeline handle these? Don't you worry, the folks at Treyarch did a fantastic job at creating some brand new features that take place of COD4's modern technology. Of course, they added some additional content as well.

Critiques -
Don't get me wrong here, this is obviously a beta version of multiplayer, there could be certain things that occur that may be bugs or certain features that may or may not be included in the final version of the game, but as of now, I really have not encountered anything that I disliked. However - yes there is actually something that stood out to me - first impressions and all - there is one thing that seemed a bit strange to me. Playing as a sniper, I noticed that it took a (seemingly) long time to actually look down the sniper scope.

Let me try to clarify this a little here. What I'm talking about is the time it took for me to actually be able to look down the sniper scope from the time I pulled the trigger to activate that functionality in the game. It seemed to me, that it took a "long" time, a time delay in the animation that I don't recall occurring in COD4. There really isn't an issue here, but I just found it to be difficult to run over to a spot and try to quickly look down the scope for a target, the move on. The time it took to look down the scope seemed to inhibit my ability to actually get my sights on someone if they were simply running by.

I could definitely see this lag as being a feature of the weapon, after all it is an extremely effective weapon type for this game. The time delay seems to add a bit of a challenge to this already, outstanding gameplay.

Final Thoughts -
With this simply being a response to my first impressions of the multiplayer (beta) aspect of the game, I can't really provide too much of an in depth review, but I can honestly say that I know that I'll enjoy COD5 very much. I am very impressed with this multiplayer aspect of the game and I look forward to playing the final version of both multiplayer and campaign modes.

As of now, I highly suggest purchasing this game, you will not be disappointed. I look forward to spending my weekend plugging away at this game. Maybe I'll post again on it. COD is awesome! Great job Treyarch!

GameSpoon - Halo 3 Recon

Coming in 2009...Halo 3 Recon!

Here's a quick overview of what this addition to the Halo 3 world will consist of - courtesy of Xbox.com:

  • All-new campaign content: The Halo 3: Recon campaign is an intriguing side story that takes place during the terrifying events leading up to the Master Chief’s return to New Mombasa in Halo 3. Experience the fate of Earth from the brand-new perspective of a special forces ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper), adding a unique outlook and new gameplay elements to the events that unfold in the trilogy’s finale. While the feel of this new chapter greatly resembles that of previous Halo experiences, Halo 3: Recon will require you to employ more elements of stealth and cunning than ever before.

  • Prepare to drop: Known for their courage, valor and, at times, insanity, ODSTs are among the fiercest UNSC soldiers, priding themselves on being the first unit deployed into hostile situations. While not as large or supernaturally gifted as their Spartan comrades, these "Hell Jumpers" more than compensate with their ferocious attitudes and unwavering nerve.

  • Expanded multiplayer collection: No Halo experience would be complete without groundbreaking multiplayer content, and Halo 3: Recon gives fans more of what they love. With exclusive new maps and expanded Forge options, Xbox LIVE® Gold members will find more multiplayer content than ever before with Halo 3: Recon.

  • Ever-growing community options: Enjoy all the great Halo 3 technological innovations, including Saved Films, screenshots, Campaign Scoring, and four-player co-op. All of the new multiplayer maps fully support the Forge editor, offering endless gameplay customization possibilities.

FlickSpoon - Who is your pick for "Best Movie Villian [whos name isn't Darth Vader]"

Who do you not want to ef with? Who would you fear looking at the wrong way? Who would be the ring leader of the biggest, evilest, crime syndicate around. The answer, my friends would probably be Darth Vader. Seems pretty obvious, at least to me.

Then I thought about this: If Darth Vader was the boss of an Italian mob family, who would be his go-to guys. His Capos who would live and die by his words.

Here is what I came up with:

Vilos Cohaagen.

Vader's Number 2.
Cohaggen proves to be the best right-hand man for Vader. What better way to destroy your enemies than cut off their air supply?

Shooter McGavin

Vader's Action Man
Shooter McGavin will do anything to win; whether it be to buy your grandmothers house or pay a jeering fan to throw you off your game, Shooter has the resources and the drive to ruin your day.

Ernie "Big Ern" McCracken

The weasil
Ernie McCracken will be your best friend, then betray you in the blink of an eye. Big Ern is a winner, and lives a winners life. Oh! and he has the balls to fuck your mom and tell you all of the details.

The Evil Lucas Barton

The young up-and-comer
A true intimidator. Lucas has all of the tools to be the best; the looks, the money, the power glove. Focused and determined, Lucas will use the resourses around him to win. Remember, he DID hire private investigators to dig up some dirt on young Jimmy, his strongest competition.

What are your thoughts. If Darth Vader was a mob boss, who would be his four Capos?

GameSpoon - Sony Playstation 3 Price Cuts

I wouldn't say that the Playstation 3 has been a failure, when compared to the massive success of the Playstation 2, but I would say that it got off on the wrong foot. Personally, I feel that Sony made a few mistakes that cost them quite a lot when the PS3 originally launched. This allowed Microsoft to take the lead, between the two systems.

Since day one, the cost of the PS3 has always been a problem in the public eye; perception is everything. The initial lump sum for a PS3 has caused people to stray from their system. Let's consider a few things here: the PS3 is technically superior to the Xbox 360; the PS3 comes standard with a WiFi adapter built-in; the PS3 online network is free; the PS3's hard-drive can be swapped out with any HDD you wish to use. Now, compare that to the Xbox 360 - to meet the PS3s potential, you have to purchase the system, purchase the WiFi adapter, and (worst of all) purchase your annual/monthly Xbox Live subscription to be able to play others online and have access to certain content. Adding these costs together places the overall cost of the Xbox 360 equal to that of the PS3, with one major exception, every year you'll need to dish out $50 for Xbox Live...people, you've been had by Microsoft.

Regardless, perception is everything. People still view the PS3 as an "expensive" system. Sony has cut the price down, but when asked about offering a price cut during the upcoming holiday season, Sony says "no"; however, industry analysts believe this is yet another mistake...

GameSpoon - Zero Punctuation: Mercenaries 2

Right on

FlickSpoon - Body of Lies

I know what I'm doing on Friday...I am looking forward to this movie, which is a rare thing to say these days, I just hope it turns out well.

RantSpoon - The Force Unleashed Glitches

Ugh, I love this game, but the glitches are getting to me. I have been consumed with finding all the Jedi Holocrons, but I hit a "glitch" that has caused some headaches.

On the last two levels of the game, the "mission objectives" menu has somehow died on me. Strange. It will not keep track of my score, side-mission and - worst of all - the number of holocrons I've found. Ugh. This means, I have no idea how many I have found. Typically, I find all but one, then I have to go back through the levels to hunt down the last one. However, on these two levels, I can't tell how many I've found! Which is causing me to check EVERYWHERE on each of these levels, just in case I missed one.

The second major glitch I've encountered, was...wait, this is a spoiler...well, when I fought a major character in the end of the game, the game froze - except for me. I could move around, but my opponent just stood there, stopped moving. I could attack this character, but could not cause any damage. I spent about 20 minutes trying to get the game to trigger a different function, with the hopes that it will break out of the loop that caused it to freeze...no dice though. I just hope it doesn't happen again.

These glitches suck, but I secretly love it. It reminds me of the old days of the NES. Playing games back in the day where you could encounter glitches that would cause you to restart the game! Ha, those were the days.

RantSpoon - shame on you

Yesterday, late afternoon, The Escapist reported that Mr. Jeff Freeman, the former GamePlay Designer for Star Wars Galaxies, took his own life.

Mr. Freeman was subject to massive ridicule, the unfortunate target of a bunch of PC gaming pricks that singled him out to place all the blame of "new game enhancements" in Star Wars Galaxies. Mr. Freeman only played a minor role in the development of these new enhancements, yet those pricks within the SWG community singled him out for a barrage of internet-hate.

What the hell is wrong with those people? It's just a video game, get over it. Though Mr. Freeman's brother claims that the SWG hate was not the root cause of the suicide, I have a hard time believing that it did not play some role in his downfall. For those who ridiculed him and those of you who have ridiculed others, you should be ashamed of yourselves. What do you think you are doing and what do you hope to accomplish? Are you happy with the outcome of these events? This gentleman was already troubled, do you think that the slanderous remarks that flooded the SWG communities would have had a positive affect on him? Ask yourself this, would you have said those things to his face?

Sad news.

GameSpoon - WoW Fit

This is fantastic! These guys have engineered a way to allow their self-propelled treadmills to interact with their World of Warcraft characters' movements (i.e. running). It's brilliant, a great example of creativity at its best.
